Responsible gambling

Updated April 2026. Practical tools and UK support options. 18+ only.

Our commitment

At UK Spin Empire, we believe gambling should only ever be a form of entertainment — never a way to make money or solve financial problems. We are committed to promoting safer gambling practices across every page of our site and encouraging our readers to use the tools and resources available to stay in control.

We do not operate any gambling services. Our role is to provide information and comparisons of UK-licensed operators. However, we take our responsibility seriously and aim to ensure our content never encourages excessive or irresponsible gambling behaviour.

Recognising the signs

Problem gambling can affect anyone regardless of age, income, or background. It is important to be aware of the early warning signs:

  • Spending more money or time gambling than you can afford
  • Chasing losses — trying to win back money you have already lost
  • Borrowing money, selling possessions, or neglecting bills to fund gambling
  • Feeling restless, irritable, or anxious when not gambling
  • Lying to family, friends, or colleagues about how much you gamble
  • Neglecting work, education, or personal relationships because of gambling
  • Using gambling as a way to escape stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Being unable to stop or reduce gambling despite wanting to

If any of these sound familiar — whether for you or someone you know — it may be time to seek support. There is no shame in asking for help, and confidential resources are available 24/7.

Tools you can use right now

Most UK-licensed operators are required to offer self-management tools. These are available in your account settings and can usually be activated immediately:

  • Deposit limits — Set daily, weekly, or monthly caps on how much you can deposit. Reductions take effect immediately; increases typically have a cooling-off period.
  • Loss limits — Cap the net amount you can lose over a chosen period.
  • Session time limits — Set a maximum duration for each gambling session. You will receive a notification or be logged out automatically.
  • Reality checks — Periodic pop-ups reminding you how long you have been playing and your net win or loss during the session.
  • Cool-off periods — Temporarily block yourself from gambling for 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or longer. During this period you cannot place bets or access games.
  • Self-exclusion — A longer-term commitment (typically 6 months to 5 years) where you are locked out of your account and removed from marketing lists.

We strongly encourage every player to set at least a deposit limit before their first session. It takes seconds and gives you a safety net even when things feel under control.

GamStop — national self-exclusion

GamStop is a free service that allows you to self-exclude from all UK-licensed online gambling companies in one step. Once registered, you will be blocked from gambling websites and apps for a minimum of 6 months, with options to extend to 1 year or 5 years.

During your exclusion period, operators are required to close your accounts, return any remaining balance, and remove you from all marketing communications. GamStop registration cannot be reversed early — this is by design, to protect you during vulnerable moments.

If you gamble in person as well as online, you can also register with the MOSES (Multi-Operator Self-Exclusion Scheme) for land-based venues through your local licensing authority.

UK support organisations

The following organisations offer free, confidential help for anyone affected by gambling — whether you are a gambler, a family member, or a friend:

  • BeGambleAware — National hub for information, advice, and support. Freephone helpline: 0808 8020 133 (open 24/7). Live chat available on their website.
  • GamCare — Confidential advice, support, and free treatment via the National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133. Also offers online group support and one-to-one counselling.
  • GamStop — Free self-exclusion scheme for all UK-licensed online gambling companies.
  • NHS Gambling Addiction — Health information, local treatment services, and referrals through the National Gambling Treatment Service.
  • Gamblers Anonymous UK — Peer support meetings (in-person and online) following a 12-step recovery programme.

Advice for friends and family

If someone close to you has a gambling problem, it can be stressful and confusing. Here are some practical steps:

  • Educate yourself — Understanding problem gambling helps you support the person without enabling the behaviour. BeGambleAware and GamCare both have dedicated resources for affected others.
  • Talk openly — Choose a calm moment to express your concerns without judgement. Focus on specific behaviours and how they affect you and the family.
  • Protect finances — If shared finances are at risk, consider separating accounts temporarily and securing access to joint savings. Do not lend money for gambling.
  • Seek support for yourself — You do not have to cope alone. GamCare offers a dedicated helpline and online forum for friends and family of gamblers.
  • Set boundaries — Be clear about what you will and will not accept. It is okay to say no.

Underage gambling

It is illegal for anyone under 18 to gamble in the United Kingdom. All UK-licensed operators are required to verify the age and identity of their customers before allowing them to deposit or play.

If you share a device or computer with young people, please take the following precautions:

  • Never save login details or passwords on gambling websites or apps
  • Use parental controls to block access to gambling sites
  • Keep payment methods secure and do not share card details
  • Talk to young people about the risks of gambling and why age restrictions exist

Useful tools: Net Nanny, CyberPatrol, and built-in parental controls in iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS.

Our editorial policy

Every page on UK Spin Empire includes an 18+ notice and links to responsible gambling resources. We do not use language that implies gambling is a reliable source of income, and we avoid terms like "guaranteed win", "risk-free" (except where quoting operator marketing with appropriate caveats), or "easy money".

Our content is reviewed regularly to ensure it meets responsible gambling standards. If you believe any content on our site is misleading or encourages irresponsible gambling, please contact us and we will review it promptly.
